Key Technology Differentiators
Highwinds' IP services and content delivery network offerings stand out from the competition. Highwinds can take your Internet content delivery initiative to the next level by providing breakthrough benefits for data center peering, real-time analytics, instant account provisioning, rapid content deployment, complete content control, and massive scalability.
Peering Interface for Faster, More Cost-Effective Delivery of Content to Eyeball Networks
With its servers residing in data centers alongside those of ISPs and other tenants, Highwinds actively promotes "peering." In fact, at any given time, about 80 percent of Highwinds' traffic is peered. In a peering relationship, Highwinds has an agreement to connect its high-speed 10 Gbps fiber into other tenants' servers (or more precisely, into the routers that connect to their servers). Thus, instead of going over the Internet, Highwinds connects directly into the peer network. Peering enables ISPs to serve the content directly to their eyeballs, eliminating the Internet with its myriad nodes as an intermediary. The peering approach is highly efficient and enables Highwinds to deliver the traffic directly to the end user while maintaining direct control of the quality of service (QoS) for its customers and resellers.
Real-Time Analytics
Typically, within 30 seconds of the first delivery of a file or media stream, Highwinds' StrikeTracker dashboard begins to show usage data in its graphs. This data includes information on hits, transfer volumes, transfer speeds and abandonment, and can be viewed in a variety of time scales and granularities. This capability is key to customers who are doing ad campaigns and want real-time data back from the edge so they can immediately know the effectiveness of their campaign. They can make adjustments in real time to their ad campaign and see how those changes affect the click-through rates and other ad metrics.
Instant Account Provisioning
Highwinds' resellers can provision customer accounts within 10 minutes or less of taking the customer's order. Other content delivery networks can take days or weeks.
Rapid Content Deployment
Large media libraries can be propagated to all POPs across the Highwinds' backbone at an unprecedented rate, and are available network-wide within a few seconds of the initial transfer.
Complete Content Control
Highwinds' content delivery network acts as a distributed file system, under the control of the StrikeTracker dashboard application leveraging FTP or web services operations. Media files can be moved, renamed or deleted from the network in seconds, completely under the reseller's or end customer's control. Live streaming events can likewise be provisioned through the dashboard without the necessity of contacting Highwinds.
Massive Scalability
In contrast to other content delivery networks, Highwinds' distributed architecture eliminates the need to implement complex dependencies to achieve massive scalability. This is a critical advantage when pushing more than 20 Gbps of traffic; other content delivery networks run into capacity challenges as their traffic grows to this level. Highwinds currently has the capacity to push nearly 500 Gbps of traffic. Adding capacity is as easy as adding more servers to the network in simple plug-and-play fashion.
